Why I love being a Chakradance facilitator (and you might too)

I should just get this out of the way upfront, I can't dance.

I mean I DO dance, I love to dance, but in a Zumba class I'm the one crashing into the person next to me because I twirled right instead of left or maybe just 10 seconds too late, I'm uncoordinated. Not just a little, like really uncoordinated. I don't think I've quite figured out my left from my right side, never mind any complicated manoeuvres with either of those sides combined.

And yet I am a Chakradance facilitator and I absolutely love it. When I do Chakradance I feel like a graceful gazelle or a tribal glamazon. So how did that happen?

Chakradance came to me during a particularly low point in my life.

At the time I thought I was over the worst of a bad patch. After being divorced for five years, things were finally starting to settle down at home. I was exercising and doing regular yoga. I was writing a blog on eating raw food and rediscovering healthy foods. Having just turned 40, I was in the best physical shape I'd ever been in...

Then BOOM! Suddenly it was as if someone pulled the power plug on me. I had no energy. My body was having inflammation and allergies all over the place. I joked that my get up and got had got up and went, until it just wasn't funny anymore.

I returned from a trip to the UK and what I thought was jet lag, turned into permanent lag. I could hardly drag my tired and sore body out of bed. I slept through lunchtime at work, I slept for hours after work. I became very depressed. Where had my mojo gone?

What was happening to me?

In retrospect I see that after decades of running on stress, and adrenaline, and bad eating habits, and after a year of counselling to address childhood trauma, all the stuff I had suppressed in my life came up through my body. It was a massive detox, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

And boy did it suck.

It was very scary because I didn't understand what was going on or if I would even recover. I'm glad to say not only have I recovered but the experience brought a whole new wave of healing and energy into my life.

Chakradance was a major part of my recovery.

Having always been interested in the chakras and in energy work, I began to research if there was a spiritual or energetic aspect to my illness.

One day when I was researching the chakras for my blog, I literally stumbled upon the Chakradance website. The combination of free-form dance and sound healing really resonated with me.

I bought the Chakradance DVD and started my practice at home.

A few months later I received an email announcing the next round of Chakradance facilitator training. "Me? A dance teacher," I laughed. "Don't be ridiculous." But I really loved Chakradance, and I had experienced some profound shifts and healing from my personal practice, why not share this with other people?

I wanted to be a healer but not on a one-to-one basis, I liked the idea of facilitating groups and I didn't have the time or money to invest in years of study.

Chakradance was affordable and would allow me to train and start my business within a few months.

Who would have thought I would teach dance meditation, because as I said, I can't dance! Or so I thought. Turns out anyone can dance once they let go of limiting ideas about what dancing is. Dance is just self-expression through movement. Swaying is dance. Toe-tapping is dance.

Chakradance is very liberating in the way it allows you to tap into your innate desire to move your body.

And because you do it with your eyes closed, you don't need to worry about how you look or what other people think of you.

Facilitating Chakradance has given me a community of dancers and an accountability to keep practising. I'm a great starter but I often lose interest in projects and struggle to maintain consistency. This way I was motivated to keep going as other people became inspired by the benefits of the practice and wanted me to run Chakradance classes for them.

Watching people grow and develop emotionally and spiritually, and achieve the changes they want in their life during a Chakradance cycle is the best.

Seeing other people benefit from practising Chakradance is so empowering and affirming for me. It keeps me motivated when my own commitment wavers. Finally I do have something of value to offer the world.

Facilitating classes has enabled me to practise Chakradance consistently for three years now. Over that time many of the issues and past trauma that was held in my physical, emotional and energy bodies have been released. Now not only am I in great physical shape, but great emotional and spiritual shape too.

Whenever stuff comes up for me now, Chakradance helps me move through it.

Chakradance has become my outlet for fun, my healing, and my offering to the world. Not only do I get to expand my spiritual life but I get to share this gift with others too.

Thank you Natalie Southgate and thank you Chakradance from the depths of my healing heart.
