“When it comes to our intuition and our psychic abilities – natural talents that are innate to us all – there is nothing more healing than a vibrant, in-tune third eye chakra. Having a healthy third eye chakra can assist us in using our intuition and insight without fear and without delusion.” – Natalie Southgate
When I first started exploring the third eye chakra, the Star Trek theme was my way in. It came to me one day in meditation and made me giggle and from then I could not get it out of my head.
I think it was Patrick Stewart’s dulcet tones, and the vision of infinite space, of a starry indigo sky, and that sense of endless possibilities. That’s what I imagined the third eye chakra to be like.
Space has always captivated and fascinated me. The possibility that there was a space that vast within me, well that I wanted to experience…
And although the third eye is by no means a place that no one has gone before, it certainly feels like that when you begin to explore it for yourself.
I remember feeling astounded that there was so much more to my perception than I had ever realised.
There’s so much mystique around the idea of the third eye chakra and psychic abilities, so for me it really helped to simplify these into concepts I could get my head around, like intuition and imagination.
In Sanskit, Ajna translates as both “perceive” and “command”, and is considered the centre of intuition and intellect.
It is the centre of inner vision and dreaming. This chakra known as the ‘third eye,’ is an energy centre situated between the brows that has major significance in the energy anatomy of many religions and belief systems.
This chakra governs mental functions of sight and visual recall, including the memory.
It is located in the centre of the forehead – inside the head, radiating inwards, its focus is self-reflection and inner sight. When something is seen in the mind’s eye, or in a dream, it is being ‘seen’ by Ajna.
The third eye chakra is said to be the centre of perception, that intuitive sixth sense of just knowing, without knowing how we know. It is also the centre of your dreams and memory recall, the chakra where you can tap into archetypal energies. Through active use of our imagination, we can gain command over our vision of the world.
When this chakra is clear and balanced you have true wisdom – a healthy intellect balanced with strong intuitive abilities. This wisdom is available to everyone, but few of us even begin to tap into our profound potential.
The third eye Chakradance is a dance of ecstatic and altered states of consciousness reached through trance-dance. The dance of the third eye is the dance of the intuitive mind. In this dance you let go of the physical world and take the journey into the psychic world of your imagination.
Traditionally shamans used trance-dance to shake off their everyday lives and to free themselves from the anchor of their ego-mind which keeps us rooted in ordinary reality and perception.
It is in Ajna that you tap into the ‘collective unconscious’ and the world of archetypes. During the Chakradance you work with an archetypal energy in order to allow that energy to enter the physical body and move through it.
By embodying archetypal energies in the meditative dance space, you can gain insight into how these energies are manifesting in your life.
Tapping into the archetypal world of the collective unconscious, allows synchronicity to flow into your life. Synchronicity is often discounted as coincidence, but it is meaningful.
In your visions, and your dreams, in the archetypal images that resonate with you, your unconscious speaks to you of a deeper truth than your physical senses perceive. The nature of the third eye chakra is spacious and vast. It feels like anything is possible, the energy is so light and free-flowing.
When the third eye chakra is deficient in energy you have a lack of trust in your intuition. By not being attuned to the subtle capabilities of the third eye, you may fail to pick up on meaningful signs and synchronicities, which if acknowledged could guide you and help you through life.
Accessing the full power of the imagination is a gift inherent in all of us. The ‘command’ function of Ajna relates to the powers of visual imagination. This allows you to shift from left-brain rational cognition to right-brain creative thinking.
This is the shift into your inner visionary. Yes, you DO have one!
Natalie’s 5 Top Tips for balancing your third eye chakra:
- Commit to regular practice of intuition building exercises (meditation, guided visualisation, trance dance, dream-work)
- Create a vision for your life. Be clear and focused. Use creative visualisation and dream boards or visual collages.
- Recognise the relevance of chance encounters, co-incidences and synchronicities. See these as signposts to guide you.
- Endeavour to live your daily life simultaneously on two planes – the rational plane and the intuitive plane.
- Learn to trust your “sixth sense”. When it feels appropriate, use intuition even if it is beyond rational explanation.
